Glaucoma Treatment
What is a
Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve. The optic nerve, responsible for transmitting visual images to the brain, consists of numerous nerve fibers akin to multiple wires within an electric cable. Blind spots develop, when there is damage to the optic nerve fibers. These unnoticed blind spots often remain undetected until there’s considerable damage to the optic nerve. If the entire nerve is destroyed blindness results.
It is the leading cause of blindness in America today. It’s is a progressive disease and usually occurs in older people. However, Glaucoma can often be prevented with early treatment. Dr. Lee specialize in early detection and treatment to prevent optic nerve damage and blindness caused by Glaucoma.
Prevention:
It is often called the “Silent thief of sight” because there are no obvious signs or symptoms until significant visual loss has occurred. Only way to know if you have glaucoma is to have a thorough eye exam and pressure check.
Recommendation:
Under Age 45:
Patients with no risk factors – Eye exam in every 4 years
Patients with risk factors – Eye exam in every 2 years
Over Age 45:
Patients with no risk factors – Eye exam in every 2 years
Patients with risk factors – Eye exam in every year
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Dr. Lee performs several tests to detect glaucoma, these test include a visual acuity test, visual field test, dilated eye exam, tonometry (which measures the pressure inside of the eye), and pachymetry ( which uses ultrasonic waves to help determine corena thickness). Regular annual eye check-ups, including a dilated pupil examination and visual field test, are crucial for individuals with a high risk of this disease.
Some of the early treatments Dr. Lee uses to treats open-angle glaucoma will usually begin with prescription medications, ointments, or eyedrops. These treatments assist the eye to drain fluid more effectively or cause it to produce less fluids. Dr. Lee may also perform several forms of laser surgery that can also help fluid drain from the eyes. Incisional surgery is also an option to create a new opening for fluid to drain, after other treatments have failed.
